A breif history of the Womens Swimsuit:

The Women’s Swimsuit has undergone many changes throughout its history. The bikini, perhaps surprisingly, was worn in ancient Greek and Roman times. In these cultures there was also quite a lot of nude bathing. However, when bathing in public, most of the time some form of body covering was considered appropriate and toga like swim attire was popular for this activity.

After the Roman Empire collapsed, bathing, especially in public, was regarded as something to be avoided. European culture had developed a general strong dislike for all things Roman and the Romans did a lot of bathing. The women’s swimsuit did not resurface again until the 18th century in Europe when spas became a popular leisure activity there. In the United States, it wasn't’t until the 19th century that people started to swim in public. However, the women’s swimsuit in these two centuries was a far cry from those in ancient times. Instead, women wore heavy dresses made of wool. As well, in the 1800’s, two piece, but very concealing bathing suits were worn by women – one piece from shoulder to knee and then pants to the ankles.

It was really in the 20th century that the women’s swimsuit started to develop. New materials allowed more swimming friendly bathing suits. Necklines started to get lower and progressively less material covered the legs. In the 1920’s, a women’s swimsuit was created that looked like a short dress and that left the legs bare. Less attractive at this time was a tight wool body suit that stopped at mid thigh. In the 1930’s and 40’s, the women’s swimsuit often consisted of 2 pieces one of which was a tank type of top and the other being body hugging shorts.

The first modern bikini was introduced in 1946. The real major change from the two piece women’s swimsuit from before was that there was more skin exposed on the stomach below the breasts, and these bathing suits were quite modest with the bottoms coming up to at least the naval throughout the 50’s. However, during this decade, most women preferred one piece bathing suits thinking that bikini’s were too daring. From the 50’s through to today, the one piece women’s swimsuit became more revealing and in the liberated sixties the bikini became much more popular and developed basically into what it looks like today, getting quite a bit smaller than before with minimal material.
